One of the best places to experience the Peruvian Amazon is the World Heritage Site Manu National Park.
Manú National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional del Manú) is a national park and biosphere reserve located in the regions of Madre de Dios and Cusco in Peru. It protects a diverse number of ecosystems including lowland rainforests, cloud forests and Andean grasslands.

We will depart Cusco early in the morning traversing interesting valleys between the Andes Mountains and picturesque countryside communities. We will visit pre-Inca tombs of the Lupaca culture and later will stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful colonial town. Along the way, we will stop for lunch in the cloud forest. From here we continue our descent through the cloud forest, a zone rich in endemic species, such as the Cock of the Rock, the Peruvian national bird that performs a unique courting ritual. We can also see orchids, bromelias, ferns, etc. We will continue to observe the spectacular nature along our journey until we arrive at our Paraiso Lodge where we will spend our first night
Breakfast will be served early followed by a forest walk where we can observe local wildlife in their natural habitat, such as monkeys and birds. Following this we will visit a coca plantation and then travel to Port Atalaya, situated along the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 m.a.s.l.. There we will begin our descent in boat to observe the enormous diversity of bird species, such as herons, vultures, cormorants, etc. until we arrive at Amazon Manu Lodge. At the end of the journey lunch will be served at the lodge. In the late afternoon, we will do a small hike around the property of the lodge to see how local species and insects interact at dusk. We will arrive back at the lodge before dinner where we will also spend the night.
Early in the morning, we will take a boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall
along the riverbank where different species of parrots, such as the blue-headed
parrot, white-eyed parakeet, chestnut-fronted macaw, among others, gather every
morning. Here they eat the clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest and
remove toxins from their bodies. After, we will return to our lodge for a delicious
breakfast.
Following breakfast, we will take a hike through the forest for 2.5-3 hours. We will
return to the lodge to eat lunch and then you will have free time to rest at the lodge
or bathe in the river. In the afternoon, we will visit Lake Machuwasi and explore the
area in balsa rafts, observing birds, such as the pre-historic hoatzin and, with luck,
other animals such as monkeys and capybaras. On the way back, we will walk
through another part of the forest to look for caimans, insects and amphibians. This
will be followed by dinner at Amazon Manu Lodge where we will spend the night.
After a delicious breakfast, take the opportunity to observe the hummingbirds around the lodge. We will then board our boat and drive up the river Madre de Dios. Here we will stop by the side of the river and take a short walk (aprox.20 mins) through the forest to the spectacular hot springs where we can take some time to relax and reflect on our memorable adventure. We will then take our transport back to Port Atalaya where our bus will await us to bring us back to Cusco. We will have lunch along the route back to Cusco, arriving between 5:30pm– 6:30pm.
