Tour Details

Salkantay (6271 m.a.s.l.) is a sacred mountain that the Indigenous Incas called Apu, meaning “the protector” and was also known to them as the “wild mountain” because no one at the time had successfully hiked it to the summit. Today, Salkanty is one of the greatest trails to reach Machu Picchu and is renowned for its constant change in microclimates from the high Andes to the deep jungle. Hikers will pass and visit beautiful scenery and natural landscapes including mountains, vallies, lagoons (including the hike to Humanity lake) and rivers and will will hike to 4, 600 m.a.s.l.

The tour includes: three days of hiking from Mollepata to La Playa; one day of hiking from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes; and a final hike from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. The difference between the 5 day and 4 day tour is that the 4 day tour does not include the visit to the hot springs and overnight stay in Santa Teresa. Instead hikers will go directly to Hidroelctrica by bus from La playa and walk to Aguas Calientes where they will spend the night. For those who are too tired to walk from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes there is the option of taking the train at an extra cost.
