We will pick you up from your hotel at 04.30 a.m. and drive to Capuliyoc (about four and half hours from Cusco) to the start of the trailhead where you will see breathtaking views of the Apurimac Valley, as well as the impressive Padreyoc and Huayna Cachora peaks. We will stop along the way for breakfast so that you are energised and ready to start the hike when we reach Capuliyoc.
Our hike today is around 12km and will take between 6-7 hours. The first part of the hike is a 4 hour descent into the Apurimac Canyon until we reach Chiquisca (1950m / 6397ft). We will then hike for another hour until we reach the roaring Apurimac River (1520m / 4986ft) where we will stop for lunch. After a good rest we will begin the climb to the Santa Rosa campsite (2095m / 6873ft). By completing this tough 2-hour climb today, it means we will be ahead of other groups when we start our hike on day 2. This campsite is further away from Santa Rosa Beach campsite (where most other groups camp), which means it will be quieter, making for a more restful evening where you can appreciate the stars.
Today we will start early at around 6am. The first part of our hike will take around 3 hours, a path made up of many switch backs that last all the way to Marampata where we will stop for a break. From here you will have your first glimpse of Choquequirao! The next part of the hike is much gentler and will take us about 2 hours to reach the ruins.
We will have lunch at the campsite that is nearest to the ruins and after lunch we will head to Choquequirao where we will have the whole afternoon to explore this incredible place that is located at 3050m / 10,007 ft. We will have a complete guided tour of the Choquequirao complex where we will visit the upper part (Hanan), and the lower parts (Urin), and some areas still covered with wild foliage and ready to be restored to the way it was in Inca times. Only about 30% of the Inca remains at Choquequirao have been excavated, the rest remains shrouded in mystery! We will stay to watch the sunset and if we are lucky maybe even some condors.
We will return to our campsite where we will have dinner and spend the night.
Today we say goodbye to Choquequirao, and have another chance to spot condors soaring through the morning air as we make our way back along the Choquequirao trail.
We will follow the same route that we came up on, back down into the Apurimac Canyon, to the river passng the campsite at Rosalina Beach. We will continue hiking up to our campsite at Chiquiscca (1950m / 6397ft) or if we are in good time all the way to Cocamasana (2450m / 8038ft).
Today is the final day of our hike. We will trek between 3 to 4-hour climbing upwards to Capuliyoc. At our destination we will be rewarded with a spectacular view. Our transport will be waiting for us at Capuliyoc to take us back to Cusco, which will take around 4.5-hour. We will have lunch on the way and arrive back at your hotel in Cusco in the early evening.
